Happy Monday, friends! In lieu of wedding planning, I thought I would get a little more personal with you guys and share my engagement story! I typically like to share posts that I think will be helpful for you in some way. And while I will still be doing posts like that, I also want you guys to get to know me a little bit better. I personally love when my favorite bloggers let me in on their personal life. It makes me feel more connected to them. So, today I’m going to do just that!
Where We Met
Let’s back up just a little bit. Now, I’m not going to go into the details of exactly how we met (that’s a story for a different day), but I want to set the stage a little bit for those of you that have no idea how Matt and I came to be! So, we met a little over 3 years ago. I started a new job, and on my first day I was introduced to the “techy” guy as I referred to him. I thought he was so handsome! I think you know where I’m going with this one 🙂 I guess you could say it was kind of love at first sight. We met and the rest was history!
Moving In Together
Matt and I moved in together about a year and a half ago. We were living in a one bedroom apartment and at the time, we were still working at the same company. Living together before getting engaged was so important to both of us. I mean, there’s so much more you learn about a person when you’re living under the same roof. We wanted to make sure we were truly compatible in every way. We lived at the apartment for about a year, and then decided to buy a home together! Yes, before we were engaged. I wrote a blog post about that! We bought our beautiful home and within 2 months of us living here, he proposed! I knew we were going to spend the rest of our lives together, so the idea of buying a house with him didn’t really scare me. It just felt right. We’ve now been in our home 8 months and absolutely love it!
For those of you that don’t know, Matt travels a decent amount for his job. And about a month before he proposed, he had been traveling pretty nonstop. When he finally got a break from traveling, he told me he wanted to take me out into one of our favorite little towns for dinner and drinks. I was completely clueless and thought it was so sweet that he wanted to take me out in the first place. I figured he wanted to spend some quality time together because he had been gone for a while. The town he took me to was kind of where it all began. We like to think of it as a hidden gem. When we first moved in together, we would go there all the time for dinner or a show or just to walk around. When we moved to our new home, we were about 25 minutes from our favorite little town. It wasn’t too far, but with the business of settling into a new home and Matt traveling for work, we hadn’t found the time to get there in a while. Needless to say, I was very excited for our night out!
It wasn’t like you see in the movies where the guy has a brand new dress and a pair of heels laying out on the bed for his girlfriend to wear. And honestly, I’m so glad that didn’t happen because that’s totally not Matt and I’s style. Plus, how obvious would that be?! When we got into town, we stopped at a bar to have a few drinks outside. It started off being a nice night (weather wise), so we were able to enjoy some sunshine for a little while. He wasn’t necessarily acting weird, but he was certainly being a little more affectionate than usual and telling me how much he loved me over and over again. In general, he’s very sweet like that on a daily basis, so I didn’t really think anything of it. After we finished up our drinks, we headed to our favorite seafood restaurant for dinner.
At this point, it started to rain a little bit. Luckily we were inside now, but we still had to walk back to our car after dinner. We had a few more drinks (I think he was getting a little nervous at this point) and then ordered our dinner. It was delicious! Such a good seafood place. If anyone is interested in knowing what the restaurant is, DM me on Instagram! I’d highly recommend if you’re in the area. Anyway, we finished up our dinner, and at this point it started to rain pretty hard. I kept saying that we should leave before the rain gets even worse. And he kept ordering more drinks!
By the time we ended up leaving, the rain had died down to almost nothing, which was pretty perfect! On our walk back to the car, he decided to take the long way. I kind of knew we were going the long way, but didn’t say anything because I trusted he would get us to where we needed to be. When we turned the corner, there was a little alleyway, and by alleyway I mean super cute opening between 2 buildings that had string lights hanging, and it just looked so cute! On one side was an ice cream shop, and the other side was a cute little restaurant. Because it had been raining, no one was sitting outside of either place, so it was literally just Matt and I. He asked if I wanted ice cream, and if you know me at all, I always want ice cream. We were looking through the window, and the ice cream place happened to be closed. When I turned around he gave me a big hug in the middle of these awesome brick buildings with string lights twinkling, and he told me how much he loved me (again), and at that point I knew something was up. When he let go of me, he got down on one knee and proposed! He said a bunch of adorable things before he actually asked if I would marry him, but I kind of blacked out from the excitement. I looked at him and said “hell yes!”
For the rest of the night we couldn’t stop smiling. We decided to have one more celebratory drink at this really cool rooftop bar. We were just so giddy and excited. It was the best night! I wish I could relive it over and over again. I know it was nothing crazy like you see in the movies or on TV, but it was PERFECT. It was private and thoughtful and a night I’ll never forget!
We are officially 6 months away from saying “I Do” and I couldn’t be more excited. I’ll be taking you guys along on this wedding planning journey, so be on the lookout for that!
Thanks for stopping by, friends! If you enjoyed, please share!
